How to Maintain Your RV Battery Cables

02/10/12

Corrosion on your battery cables or terminals can indicate an old or improperly functioning RV battery.

Steps:
1. Select RV battery cables according to your battery's size and routing length.

2. Exercise caution when choosing ready-made cables because insulation can conceal the size of the gauge wire.

3. Avoid cables with bolt-on terminals because they cannot be properly sealed to prevent corrosion.

4. Check the RV cables for breaks, corrosion or stripped insulation.

5. Check that the terminals are tightly fitted to the ends of the cable.

6. Remove cables from the RV battery, negative first, and clean with a solution of baking soda and water.

7. Clean the terminal posts with the same solution.

8. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the terminal posts. Reconnect the cables to the RV battery.

Tips:
Be careful not to apply too much petroleum jelly.
